Kargil 1999: The Impregnable Conquered

Y.M. Bammi (Author)
Synopsis This book answers vital questions on the relations between India and Pakistan. Was the Pakistani intrusion into Kargil an isolated incident? Was it a manifestation of the evolution of dichotomy in Indo-Pak relations? Why does Pakistan consider Kashmir the ‘core issue’? What are the nuances of fighting in the rugged high altitudes? Kargil: The Impregnable Conquered discusses the intrusions and investigates into the readiness of the Indian war machine to face the challenge before them. The author also incorporates the criticism of the management of the Armed Forces during the Kargil war by analyzing and offering the various options that each level of command could have possibly adopted, to achieve better results. Gen. Bammi then goes on to suggest how Pakistan may have reacted to those alternate Indian responses. Being a retired Army official, the author acknowledges that the Army is not a singular force but is made of individuals who contribute through their patriotically stoic endeavours to achieve collective victory. This book highlights the gallantry of the Indian Armed Forces who took it upon themselves to fight till the very end in the most extreme of environmental conditions. Weaved into the narrative is an assessment of the success of the Indian and American diplomatic efforts during the challenging times. The author presents a wide and intelligent understanding of the war, its implications and the pragmatic lessons for the future.
