Synopsis The Mizos, which means highlanders, are the most progressive of all the tribes of north-east India. Before the advent of Christianity and modern state systems they lived in the sylvan glory of nature under the chiefs. The book deals with the cultural heritage of the Mizos. The Mizo system of economy was the inseparable part of the chiefdom, so was the political and legal system which controlled the social behaviour as well as the military strategies. Personal relationship of the husband and wife, chief and the slaves, father and the children, individual and society that helped flourishing of distinctive Mizo culture in the gerontocratic social order has been depicted in a simple and crisp language. But the study remains incomplete like the moon sans lustre, without the life sketches of some important chieftains who shaped the destiny of the perspective clans. Thus it includes life stories of eminent chiefs both male and female. This has rendered the work a national biography of the Mizos as well. Any scholar on tribal studies can hardly ignore its intrinsic appeal.
