About the author

Ranjan Kumar Das

Ranjan Kumar Das, aged 43, belongs to the Assam Forest Service. Joining as a Forest Ranger in 1982, he has come a long way and served as the Divisional Forest Officer, Eastern Assam Wildlife Division with the Kaziranga National Park under him during 2003-2004. He underwent a total training period of five years in Forestry and Allied subjects including a Post Graduation Course in Wildlife Management from the Wildlife Institute of India. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Chairman, West Bengal Forest Development Corporation during 1982-84 and the E.P.Gee Award during 1984-1986, being the best student on the subject of Wildlife Management. During 2000, he was awarded with the prestigious Kailash Sankhala National Fellowship by teh Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. He started as a Forest Ranger in Kaziranga National Park during 1984 and served as the Senior Wildlife Warden for two years, as the DFO of the State Zoo for a brief Period, ad the DFO of Western Assam Wildlife Division (Nameri National Park and Burha Chapori Sanctuary) for five years and as the DFO of Sonitpur West Division for two years. He was instrumental in confirming a population of endangered White Winged Duck in Nameri during 1995 and got the scientific report published from the Threatened Wildfowl Research Group, U.K. He studied the rhino reintroduction project in Dudhwa National Park during 1990. He has authored several articles in leading regional newspapers and magazines, and as author of a book-Kaziranga Leaves from a Forester's Notebook is his attempt. He was adjudged the best photographer during the Wildlife Week in 1984 and has videographed several documentary films on Kaziranga which are being released.
