Silence Speaks: The Wording from the Chalkbord of a Monk
Synopsis
Baba Hari Dass is a monk who does not speak. The practice of keeping silence is called mauna, in Sanskrit. Its aim is less about silencing the voice and more about silencing the mind which tends to be filled with worries, desires, and clingings. We are privileged to be touched through this book with advice and teachings of a spiritual master who, out of that silence, gives form to the unexplainable and sheds light on our daily life predicaments. In this present edition, material has been reorganized into specific categories for easier access. Several illustrations, drawn by the original artist, are added. Some of the wording has been updated, both to reflect contemporary English usage and for clarification of difficult concepts. Babaji writes: “There is an inner silence. It can not be heard by the ears, only by the heart.†This is the silence – the source, the all-pervading stillness from which we come and to which we return. It is the wellspring of wisdom and peace, compassion and love. Words in this book will filter into the silent spaces of our heart. It will bring stillness to our mind. They will speak to the silence in our soul.
