Indian Banking System: Development Performance and Services

Bishnupriya Mishra (Author) Sathya Swaroop Debasish (Author)
Synopsis Banking sector plays a vital role in the economic development of a country. It is also an integral part of the financial system of a modern industrial economy. During the post-nationalization era, this sector had phenomenal growth and thus a study of its efficiency was of paramount importance. The reforms in the banking sector was made in 1991 with the advent of liberalization of the economy. The performance of the nationalized banking industry in India has been an issue of serious concern for couple of years. And presently, with the entry of the private banks competition has grown exponentially and profitability is on the downslide. The Narshiman Committee on financial sector reforms brought to light the alarmingly low profitability position, the high and growing Non-performing Assets (NPA’s) and the relatively low capital base of the nationalized banks. This book entitled: “Indian Banking System: Developments, Performance and Services” seeks to present an overview of the significant features and developments in Indian banking, critically examines the various parameters relating to performance of nationalized banks in India and attempts to measure the level of satisfaction among banking customers in India. It will be useful to the policy makers and professional bankers to take investment related decisions and monitor critical factors effecting profitability performance of nationalized banks. Identification of critical strength areas and points of weakness is also facilitated by the study which may serve as a guide for operational management in banks and provide an evaluation on performance of nationalized in India. The study is relevant in the context of the spate of banking reforms initiated since 1991 which has close bearing on overall profitability of the banks. This book will also be helpful to bankers, research scholars, academicians, government officials and students.
