Y. Vaikuntham (Author)
Synopsis

Studies in Socio-Economic and Political History, Hyderabad State covers a wide range of subjects on the history of a premier princely State. Some of the subjects covered are quite interesting and needs further studies. It covers the initial problems about the succession after Nizam-ul-Mulk and the consequent interference of the French and the English East India Company’s and their changing fortunes, the images and influence of the French revolution on south Indian rulers, Oriental culture and the Raj throw interesting light in this book. The origins of Nationalism, rise of public awakening in the state, the repressive measures of the outocratic government of the Nizam, birth of Hyderabad State Congress, Vandemataram movement – a dynamic student movement on the Osmania University campus – are probing articles. The Peasant problems, peasant distress due to increasing debt and world economic depression, mass unrest due to food policy are the other important topics discussed in this book. New areas which find place in this book are conflict between the Nizam and the Raj for the exploitation of natural resources in the state, water resource management in Hyderabad state throw new light. This book further raises some issues on the ulterior motives of the colonial government to exploit the resources in the States and also the failure of the Nizams to defy the Raj but yet worked for optimum utilization of waters in the last quarter of its rule. This book will throw new light on these aspects and certainly contribute to the readings on the History of Hyderabad State.
