Synopsis Summar monsoon rains constitute the greatest climatic resource of India. Yet in the years when there is an aberration in the monsoon rains, the arid, semi-arid or dry land areas of the country where any access to water is dependent only on local rainfall because of little or none technical infrastructures and low societal levels, get affected by “drought syndromes”. This book which seeks to update the literature regarding drought crisis management on other hand. It is hoped that the methodology provided in the book helps in working out drought indices for a drought-prone region so that the “enigma” of drought is solved and the response efforts in facing drought which got changed for the first time in the 1987 drought from a reactive crisis management approach to a more pro-active drought management, becomes more comprehensive so that the nation doesn’t have to worry about this natural disaster. It is hoped that this book will get a wide audience including students, research scholars, scientists, resource managers, environmental planners and decision makers.
