The Prime Movers of Indian Society

A.P. Bali (Editor) J.S. Gandhi (Editor)
Synopsis Professions occupy an enviable place in all the modern societies as they do in India. Through control and monopoly over technical expertise and scientific knowledge they direct and in some cases even determine the direction of change in society. This is also apparent in the context of contemporary Indian society in which lawmen, doctors, social workers and educationists wield immense power. As it is easy to see, they not only provide crucial expertise to fulfill important social needs, but also help define the very nature and composition of such services. The book contains first hand studies of some professions by noted scholars drawn from diverse backgrounds and institutional settings, and constitute important indicators of the way some of the very important institutions of society-law, medicine, education, etc. are going to shape in the near future.
