Synopsis The present book covers fundamental theory of equilibrium properties of perfect crystalline solids, non-equilibrium properties, defects and discordered systems. It describes how the excitations and imperfections of actual solids can be understood with simples models that have firmly established scope and power. The foundation of this book is based on experiment, application and theory. Several significant advances in the field have been added including high temperature superconductors, quaiscrystals, nanostructures, superlattices, tunneling, light-emitting diodes and new magnetic materials. It will serve as an introductory text on solid state physics for seniors and beginning graduate students in physical science and engineering, covering topics which include crystal structure and binding, phonons, fermi surfaces and metals, superconductivity, magnetic resonance, and surface and interface physics.
