Snake Charmers

Miriam Robertson (Author)
Synopsis Snake Charmers have long been surrounded by myth… Based on intensive research carried out in Rajasthan, India, this study of Snake Charmers details the present way of life of the Kalbelia Jogi Naths since their adaptation from nomadism to semi-sedentarism. Central to their lives is their traditional and continuing occupation as Snake Charmers. The Kalbelias’ religious orientation as Naths, and their work as healers, spirit mediums, entertainers, beggars, agricultural and construction workers is described. Also discussed is the Kalbelias’ system of dispute settlement, brideservice, marriage, death and inheritance. Non-pastoral nomads are found in most parts of the world and are capable of infinite adaptation. The Kalbelias of Rajasthan have a symbiotic relationship with the other peoples around them and as Snake Charmers form a historic link through time.
