Being as Consciousness: Yogacara Philosophy of Buddhism

Carmen Dragonetti (Author) Fernando Tola (Author)
Synopsis This work is intended to be an introduction to the study of the Yogacara Buddhist philosophy together with its commentaries and notes for better comprehensibility of the contents of three edited and translated texts, namely Alambanapariksavrtti of Dignaga; the Vimsatika Vijnaptimatratasiddhih and Trisvabhavakarika of Vasubandhu. Yogacara is one of the great philosophical schools of Mahayana Buddhism. It produced many first class philosophers of deep and subtle insight, which gave rise to a huge literature, many of those works can be considered, according to universal criteria, as philosophic masterpieces, as for instance the three treatises that this volume contains. The general introduction to this comprehensive and scholarly work discusses the initial philosophical position in Buddhism; followed by the arising of the Buddhist idealistic position and sutras of idealistic tendency as well as the great masters of the idealistic Yogacara school. Further more the introduction describes the principal philosophical tenets of the school and some other themes that appear in the three treatises alongwith factors that contributed to the arising of the idealistic conception of chittamatra and the importance of the Yotacara school of philosophy.
