Tribal Development Programmes and Administration in India

Ashok Ranjan Basu (Author)
Synopsis Tribal Development Programmes and Administration in India are being increasingly scrutinized these days to help specially those who fall below the poverty line. There is a considerable diffusion of authority, inadequate control, lack of coordination and from the point of view of the tribals, difficulty in indentifying persons concerned with specific programems because of the growing complexity of the institutions. In addition, the development strategy of the tribal communities has to be linked up with the developmental strategy of the nation but the traditional institutions have not yet evolved suitable norms and standards which the tribals could comprehend easily. No serious attempt has been made to bring about a fusion of the two sets of institutions. Dr. Ashok Ranjan Basu presents a systematic account and evolution of the various tribal development programmes in the various sectors undertaken by the Government and critically assesses the overall capability of the administrative system vis-?-vis the development plants for tribal areas. The coverage includes a conceptual framework of tribal development, specific programmes in the field of Land Reforms, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandary, Power and Industry, Communications, Education and Health. Special emphasis has been laid on personnel for development administration followed by a detailed discussion on implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. An outstanding and thought provoking book for academicians and administrators alike with a premium for those who love Himalays and its People. Comprehensive in its coverage and scope, multi dimensional approaches and strategies of tribal development have been objectively analysed. Based on rigorous research methodology, the book presents a new perspective, both pragmatic and challenging.
