The Press in India: Perspective in Development and Relevance

K S Padhy (Author) R.N. Sahu (Author)
Synopsis Communication as a means of transmission of information and as a process of development underwent a sea-change with the invention of the printing press. It was, however, expedited, strengthened and stabilized with the publication of newspapers. Over the years the Press has played a dominant role in the dissemination of news and information. A magnificent gift to the mankind and highly indispensable, it does a splendid job, performs a crucial role as a communicator. Because of its importance and significance, it has been highly acclaimed, admired and appreciated. And it won’t be unpalatable to say that what air is to the living beings, the Press is to the society. Unfortunately, some do not tolerate the Press as it exposes them by speaking the plain truth, the bitter truth, the unpleasant truth. Hence their attempt to suppress it, muzzle it, suffocate it and if necessary eliminate it. Still then it survived, it survives and it will survive with glory to fulfil its mission. The present work has made an attempt to discuss the origin and growth of the Indian Press, Its role and responsibility as a communicator, its freedom, and measures adopted by the authorities – executive, legislature, judiciary – to suppress it. The importance of the Press Council in ensuring Press freedom is also highlighted.
