Synopsis In the 22nd Edition (2003), the DDC has kept pace with the dynamic world of IT and information network. This book introduces the students and practitioners to the process of assigning and constructing class numbers by the new edition of the DDC involving the use of the schedules and six tables. A chapter each been devoted to the organization of the system (in 4 volumes), subject analysis, each one of the six tables and the relative index. Introduction highlights the salient features of the DDC 22. An additional chapter is devoted to the multiple synthesis. New examples have been added from the revised schedules of 004-006 Computers, 200 Religion. 340 Laws and from the current literature. It provides a complete course in the practice of the DDC assuming no background knowledge of the DDC on part of the users. Examples have been graded and number building has been depicted through facet formulae and equations. Aim is to be fully illustrative, simple, clear and comprehensive.

About the author

M.P. Satija

Mohinder Pratap Satija, currently a Professor in Library and Information Science in the Guru Nanak Dev University. Amritsar, is in the library profession for last three decades. As an author of more than twenty books, about 100 papers and 150 book reviews published in Indian and foreign library journals, he has collaborated with international experts in Indian and foreign library journals, he has collaborated with international experts in India and abroad. His works have been translated in Hindi, Spanish, German and French. His major contribution lies in enriching the library science literature and many bibliometric studies have found him a prolific author. Having done his Ph.D. on Ranganathan studies, he has been instrumental in interpreting and propagating Ranganathan’s works and ideas to the new generation of librarians. He has visited Germany, France, Finland, England, Nepal, the Netherlands and Belgium in connection with professional work. He is associated with many professional journals such as Information Management Report (Bowker-Saur, UK), Library Times International (USA), the Lucknow Librarian (India) Ranganathan REsearch Bulletin (India) and Knowledge Organisation (USA)/Germany). He is the Indian Co-ordinator of the International Society for Knowledge Organisation (ISKO) (USA). Dr. Satija is a life member of many library and information science associations and has delivered lectures in many universities. He served as a Visiting Fellow for three months in Maastricht MeLuhan Institute, University of Maastricht in the summer of 1999, and is an advisor to the Harrod’s Librarian’s Glossary (Gower, UK). He is member, Advisory Board of the International Yearbook of Library and Information Science (S. Chand & Co., Delhi). As trustee of the Professor Kaula Endowment for Library Science, he has actively contributed for its development.
