Synopsis The book deals with a range of issue of current interest in population, health and development. The research papers in this volume are based on analysis of macro data, large-scale surveys and small-scale field studies with focus in different states in India. The volume is organized into four major section: Methodological Issues, Mortality and Fertility Studies, Reproductive Health, Current Issues in Population. The book provides insights on recent developments in methods of demographic analysis that included human development index, sampling and non-sampling issues in large-scale surveys and assessment of adult mortality and life expectancy. It also examines evidence of Hindu-Muslim fertility differentials. The book also addresses critical reproductive health issue such as use of emergency contraceptives, sexual behaviour of rural male youth, and factors that influence pregnancy and post delivery complications. The section on current issues focuses on stagnation in urban growth, problems of widening gender disparities and ageing due to declining fertility, impact of irrigation development on demographic changes and the role of members of panchayati raj institutions in health and family welfare programmes. The book is of importance not just to demographers but to other social scientists, planners, policy makers and administrators as well.

About the authors

T.K. Roy

T.K. Roy, Director and Senior Professor, International Institute for Population Science, Mumbai has a distinguished career spanning over a period of 36 years. He has been associated with varous research projects such as the national family health survey and the reproductive and child health survey funded by USAID and the World Bank. He has published three books and about 70 research articles in reputed national and international journals. Dr. Roy has contributed immensely in the areas of population policy and programmes and survery research.

M. Guruswamy

M. Guruswamy is Professor in the Department of Development Studies at IIPS, Mumbai. He has about two decades of teaching and research experience at IIPS. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in demography from the Australian Natiional University, Canberra. He has published a number of papers in reputed journals and books. his areas of research interest are population and development, substantive fertility and social research methodology.

P. Arokiaswamy

P. Arokiasamy is Reader in the Department of Fertility Studies at IIPS. He has about two decades of teaching and reserch experience. He has been a recipient of a number of awards and was a post-doctoral fellow at the London School of Economcis. He has published three books and numerous papers in reputed national and international journals. His research contributions are in the areas of fertility, gender issues and population health.
