Iconography of Siva: With Special Reference to Select Temples in Nothern Andhra
Synopsis
Indian iconography divides itself into three kinds-the Hindu, the Buddhist and the Jain. Hindu iconography in its turn can be divided into three main branches-the Saiva, the Vaishnava and the Sakteya. The study of Lord Siva's several manifestations helps us in understanding the broad framework of Indian iconography. From the beginning of the twentieth century, Hindu iconography has been studied, both intensively and extensively. A great number of books have come out. But unfortunately, the Andhra region was not well-represented in those studies. So, this attempt at the study of Siva iconography, as it obtained in the northern districts of Andhra Pradesh. It pertains to twenty-five select temples. The selection is based on the availability of icons having special relevance to this study. It is richly informative and reveals facts which did not come to notice earlier.
