Synopsis AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) has become one of the most important public health concerns in contemporary society. Recent data suggest that an estimated 36.1 million persons (adults and children) are living with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) or AIDS (UNAIDS/WHO 2000). Approximately 21.8 million persons have died from AIDS-related illnesses by year-end 2000 (UNAIDS/WHO 2000). The multitude of tragedies arising from HIV and AIDS is a problem facing every country on earth. As a means of exploring how this problem is viewed in different settings around the world, this unique volume presents case studies of carefully selected countries representative of each region.
