Synopsis
Based on the findings of the author’s doctoral research, the present volume carefully exami9nes the multi-faceted problems of the Modern Small Scale Industrial Sector of Assam with particular reference to the undivided district of dibrugarh. Taking capacity utilization as yardstick for Industrial growth, the study analyses the various constraints relating to Marketing, Financial, Material, Labour, Power, Transport and Climate etc. Which “stand in the way of the SSI units in utilizing their full capacities. Apart from these objective problems the book points out certain subjective issues which hinder smooth functioning of the SSI Units. The effectiveness of various incentive and supporting measures of the Government to the SSI sector, their channeling procedures and the entrepreneurs’ response and attitude to such measures are also scrufinised. Moreover, the prospects of ancillary and down stream industries on the basis of demands and wastes of large and medium scale unites are examined with great care. A few striking features of the book are (a) it measures the extent of loss of the community due to existence of idle capacity in the SSI Units; (b) it points out the factors contributing to motivate entrerpreneurship and correlates the same with performance of the industrial Units; and (c) it examines industrial sickness under small scale sector in its true perspective pointing out the apparent and real causes thereof. The book, maked by clear and lucid expression introduces various new lines of analysis in the social science researchers and also to the enlightened public.
