K.V. Ramesh

K.V. Ramesh (b. 1935) joined the Epigraphy Branch of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1956 and has eversince been engaged in epigraphical and historical research. Besides contributing a large number of research papers for various seminars and journals, he has authored two books in English, 'A history of South Kanara' and 'Jain Literature in Tamil' and three more books in Kannada. His 'Corpus of Western Ganga Inscriptions', being published by the ICHR and his other work 'The Vatapi Chalukyas' are now in the Press. He visited Bulgaria in 1982 on cultural Exchange and Japan in 1983 as an invitee to the XXXI Internationa Converence on Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa. He is presently holding the office of Director in the Archaeological Survey of India and is one of the Founder Members and a former Secretary and Executive Editor of the Epigraphical Society of India. He is also one of the Vice Presidents of the Place Names Society of India. Dr. Ramesh, who has the advantage of knowing, besides Sanskrit, all the South Indian languages, is currently the Editor of the Epigraphia Indica in his capacity as Director, Epigraphy.

S. Swaminathan

Born in 1953, Dr. S. Swaminathan took his Master Degrees in First Class in History and Tamil literature from the University of Madras. He joined the Epigraphy wing of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1980. Siince then he is working in Dravidian Epigraphy. In 1989 he was awarded Ph.D. degree by the University of Mysore, Mysore, for his thesis entitled “Chola Parantaka I and his times which substantially and his times which substantially represents the present book. Besides this he has published nearly seventy articles in various journals and volumes. He also serves as an editor of the Journal of the Place-Name Society of India and Assistant Secretary of the Epigraphical Society of India.

C.S. Vasudevan

Born in the year 1963, the author took his M.A. Degree with first rank from the Madras University in 1988. He took his P.G. Diploma in Archaeology with first rank from the Institute of Archaeology, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi in 1990. He has received training at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, London under a Fellowship administered by the British Council in 1992-93. In 1995 he was awarded Ph. D. Degree by the Nagpur University, Nagpur for his research disstertation entitled The Temples of Andhra Pradesh: A Socio-Economic Analysis (C.400 to 1300 A.D.). Besides this book which substaintially represents his doctoral thesis has published a number of research articles relevant to Archaeology, Epigraphy, Onomastics and other allied fields in many reputed journals. He has worked briefly with Temple Survey Project (South) and Office of the Director (Epigraphy), of the Archaeological Survey of India. He is presently working as a Lecture in the Department of Archaeology, Kannada University, Hampi. He has participated in a number of explorations and excavations conducted by the Department as well as the Archaeological Survey of India. He along with the faculty members of the University is carrying out the documentation of the temples of Haveri district in Karnataka. He is at present editing one of the volumes on Archaeology for the University.
