The Twentieth Century: Indian Short Story in English

Kamal Mehta (Editor)
Synopsis The short story, which is the oldest and the richest form of literature in India, is at the same time, the most neglected and misunderstood genre of writing, as it has not received the critical attention that it has deserved. Though it is the oldest form, yet technically, it is the latest form of writing; its christening took place in 1933 only. Its flexibility of form and its closeness to the methods of drama and poetry on the one hand, and its employment by a large number of writers on the other hand, have made it a challenging form for the critics. This anthology of critical articles attempts to examine and assess the art of some of the prominent 20th century Indian short story writers in English. It discusses the early 20th century writers like Mulk Raj Anand, R.K. Narayan and Raja Rao as well as the contemporary voices like Anjana Appachana, Gautam Bhatia, Manoj Das, Jhumpa Lahiri, Shashi Deshpande and Salman Rushdie. This volume will provide some insights into these writers and their stories taken up for discussion and further attract serious critical attention towards this almost marginalized genre of literature.
