Commercial Agri-Enterprises: Strategy, Achievement and Future Prospects

S.N. Misra (Author)
Synopsis Commercial agri-enterprises are the outcome of the New Agricultural policy, which helps the farmers to adopt different types of agri-enterprises as per the capability, aptitude and the norms of asset holding fixed for these farmers. One of the positive impacts envisaged in the policy is to transform subsistence agriculture to commercial agriculture by giving agriculture the status of an industry. It is expected that with the establishment of commercial agri-enterprises would help to promote primary products in agriculture to be subsequently used by the enterprises, but also would help to establish trade contacts with the overseas markets through export of finished agro-products. The benefit of expanded commercial agri-enterprises would be reaped both by the national economy in general and the local or regional economies in particular, in terms of increased production, income and employment. The study is based on the following objectives: (a) To study the structure, organization and operation of the commercial agri-enterprises both farm and non-farm sector, (b) To assess the impact of commercial agri-enterprises on the growth of output, income and employment in farm and non-farm sector, (c) To examine the usefulness of commercial agri-enterprises in establishing market linkages between primary producers and industries and between industries and the market (domestic and foreign), (d) To make an assessment of the benefits received for the investment made by entrepreneurs, financial institutions and government in commercial agri-enterprises. The published book is a valuable addition to the current stock of literature in the subject which are few at the national and regional levels. This book is useful to the academicians, researchers, statesmen, policy-makers, bureaucrats and students involved in country’s agricultural development and agricultural planning. Even the general readers will find the book to be interesting and useful.
