Synopsis This Volume summarises the results of almost a decade of research work on high altitudes by the author. Though the main thrust of this volume draws heavily on the researches conducted under the segis of interntional Biological programme in India, the results have been reviewed comprehensively in the light of contemporary in the light of contemporary situations in other parts of the world. While several references account for the general problems of human populations, living or working under the hypoxic conditions in India, this book systematically reviews the existing researches, explains the underlying features of adaptation and goes on to analyse the morphological and physiological adaptive responses.. In addition the author has ventured into another field of anthropology, where dermato-glyphics has been used as a tool to study miscegenation in a high altitude living populations. It is hoped that this work will stimulate wider interest in one of the most fascinating fields i.e. , high altitude studies.

About the author

R. Malhotra

Dr. R. Malhotra (b. 1950) has been an active researcher on Himalayan populations. He has conducted extensive field work and published a number of bio anthropological papers on various groups living in Himachal Pradesh. He was closely associated with the Human Adaptability project on “Study of anthropological variability in selected populations living under varied climatic conditions in Himalayas” lnitiated under the aegis of International Biological Programme. He also subbmitted his dociorate thesis on :A study of physical growth and developmental status of a high altitude living population in the Himalayas.” Besides his interest in altitude adaptation, the other areas in which Dr. Malhotra has contributed are demography, dermato-glyphics and tribal welfare. These interests are well reflected through his book entitled “The Indian Islanders: An Anthropological perspective , and numerous other research papers. Dr. Malhotra is currently attached to Anthropological Survey of India, Dehradun and to one of those few anthropologists who have conducted and supervised researches on various populations spread over the remote corners of the Indian sub-continent.
