CITES: Implementation in Nepal and India: Law, Policy and Practice
Synopsis
The convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) seeks international cooperation to protect listed wildlife species from threats of over-exploration, including their trade. Nepal and India as signatories and parties to CITES have international obligations to control the trade of products made from any parts of wildlife that are protected, endangered or threatened with extinction. The book is an outcome of a legal and policy research work on the concerned field. Thus, one can find an in-depth analysis of the CITES implementation status in Nepal and India. The book also attempts to suggest for a change rather than only analyze the present status. "Though both Nepal and India are signatory parties of CITES, these countries have not performed to their best to control illegal trade in wildlife, because they have not realized the enormity of the task to control ends and the deep-rooted nature of the trade. The book also outlines the legal and policy level failures, which have resulted in failure to control the illegal trade in flora and fauna causing an irrepairable loss to the natural endowments. The book concludes with suggestions to plug the loopholes in different legislations and enforcement strategies with a model for better implementation of CITES in both the countries.
