Synopsis India has the unique distinction to present one of largest vegetable oil economy in the world. It has been anticipated that the demand of edible oil and oil seeds by 2009-2010 world be 190 lakh tonnes and around 56 million tonnes respectively if per capita income grows by 5 per cent. This challenging demand by and large has to be countered by increasing the production of seven annual edible oil crops namely, rapeseed and mustard, groundnut, soybean, sunflower, safflower, sesame and niger. The book recounts the present state of research endeavour in these crops. Indian oilseeds scenario in global context has been reviewed with emphasis on the production, productivity, area coverage, growth rate and marketing. The book describes the post-harvest technology of these seven oil crops stressing the importance of storage, processing and oil extraction. Finally, in the context of globalization important and significant suggestions are presented with sufficient background information to promote and advance the oilseed production. The book also enlists general information on seven annual oilseeds along with few promising released varieties/hybrids with their productivity potentials in terms of seed production and oil content.
