Library Management: An Organisational Perspective

Lokesh Sharma (Author)
Synopsis Modern organisations exist in a complex environment with growing demand for fast and effective strategic responses. Similarly, modern management techniques can help us in optimising resources: human, material, financial, time, space, equipment, through designing suitable management practices for accelerating the process of development. In this book of management and organisational behaviour, libraries and librarians have been dealt as any other organisations and managers. Librarians as custodians of documents have been considered as the main disseminators of information for scholarly activities. But, the scenario has greatly changed since information technology took over the arena and made information generation, management and dissemination activities the main focus of the modern world. Librarians have to now compete with another group of people who may not possess the depth and breadth of library holdings but, surely had access and could disseminate information at the right time to the right user. It is at this juncture that libraries and librarians have started facing the challenge to change their age old methods. All of us now have to stop and think about the changes that are required. No longer can users be taken for granted that they will accept what is given in whichever form. The quality factor has become important because the right information has to be given to the right person at the right time in the right form. It is, therefore, inevitable to develop in practising managers, the Librarians, right kind of attitudes and mindsets and enhance their quality of thinking and judgment so that they subordinate their functional prejudices to the interest of the organisation and take responsibility for its survival and accomplishment of goals and objectives. This requires familiarising these Managers, the Librarians and Information Scientists, with concepts, principles, techniques and approaches of management and organisational behaviour. Existing literature on the subject is not complete at all because not a single book gives comprehensive treatment to all dimensions of management and organisational behaviour. Secondly, most of the books do not shed lurid light on methodology required to help a manager to improve his skills in strategic planning process. Thirdly, existing books are oriented to the western environment and lack focus on Indian environmental developments. The present text aims at filling the gap by providing adequately for the above deficiencies. The present text is based on various organisational management practices and perspectives, but the main focus is centered around three variables.
