The book Women and Rural Development Programmes is an attempt to assess the extent to which these development policy and programmes under Five Year Plans have been able to really improve the status and the lot of women in Indian society. Discussing the evolution of rural development policy and programmes in a timeframe since Independence the authors analyse the impact of various macro policies and programmes on rural women. What makes this attempt more meaningful is a focus on specific development programmes meant for rural women under Five Year Plans. Emerging conclusions are the need of re-orientation of rural development policy to bring rural women in the mainstream of development. The book also emphasizes on the need of an effective women movement for a real breakthrough in development of their status and living condition.

About the authors

Madhuri Nath

Madhuri Nath, basically related to Hindi literature, later developed interest in economics and continued her formal study upto earning Ph. D. degree in Economics. She has genuine interest in contemporary Indian economic problems particularly to the problems related to women. She is a social activist and not only in writing rather in practice also, she participates voluntarily in various rural women welfare programmes.

Binoy N. Verma

Binoy Nath Verma (b. 1946) having uniformly a brilliant academic career with three gold medals to his credit has been a successful teacher and researcher. He has been known for his contributions in contemporary analysis of rural/agricultural problems particularly related to the eastern region agriculture. In his post-doctoral research at the Centre for the Study of Regional Development, JNU, New Delhi and at the University of Wisconsin USA, (under Ford Foundation Scheme) he worked on regional and institutional dimensions of Indian Agriculture respectively. Dr. Verma’s valuable research papers have been published both in national and international reputed journals. There are several books to his credit including a series of three books on “Agrarian Relation in Transition in the Eastern region”. Dr. Verma was awarded UGC Research Scientistship (Professor level) to undertake five years’ research on “The Process of Institution Technology Interaction in Agrarian Settings of Eastern India”. Presently he is University Professor and Chairman in the Department of Agricultural University, Pusa, Bihar, Hon. Director of Comprehensive Cost of Cultivation Scheme, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India and also as Member-Secretary “Agroclimatic Regional Planning Project” of Planning Commission in Rajendra Agricultural University, he is doing Commendable Research.
