Synopsis
Though in principle women has a high place in Indian society, in practice, decidedly with intense gender inequalities they are a less privileged class facing various types of exploitation since remote past. Of late, an awakening among women and a consciousness to improve the lots of women on the part of the Government has emerged in the process of development during planned era. The book Women and Rural Development Programmes is an attempt to assess the extent to which these development policy and programmes under Five Year Plans have been able to really improve the status and the lot of women in Indian society. Discussing the evolution of rural development policy and programmes in a timeframe since Independence the authors analyse the impact of various macro policies and programmes on rural women. What makes this attempt more meaningful is a focus on specific development programmes meant for rural women under Five Year Plans. Emerging conclusions are the need of re-orientation of rural development policy to bring rural women in the mainstream of development. The book also emphasizes on the need of an effective women movement for a real breakthrough in development of their status and living condition.
