Indian Writing in English (Vol. II)

Rama Kundu (Editor)
Synopsis Indian Writing in English is such a vast and variegated field today that no single anthology could claim to be representative, or doing justice to the subject. Still the present anthology, which happens to be the second in the series, tries to give a quick glimpse of the range, starting from Toru Dutt, and ending with Sudhi Kakar, while including in between a glance at the grand old man Nirad C. Chaudhuri, the ‘Big Three’ early novelists along with a fourth, i.e., G.V. Desani, Anita Desai’s novel of the seventies, Upamanyu’s novel of the eighties, Khushwant Singh’s novel of 1990, Roy’s and Kakar’s novels of the late nineties, in addition to poets as variant as Ezekiel and Kamala Das, and the spectrum of contemporary Indian short fiction in English. It is interesting and exciting to note how scholars have looked back and forth and around across the decades of Indian English Literature and addressed the above authors and their work in the following pages, - reverentially, ecstatically, critically, even castigatingly, but always with the seriousness of committed scholarship. It is also particularly courageous of the authors to explore highly controversial and/or very recent works and bring out their embedded significances. With the critical insights and information provided by the various authors in this rich collection of variegated articles, the Volume will be of real help to students, scholars and teachers in the area, and also a delight to the common reader.
