Tribal Mortuary Practice: An Anthropological Study Among the Juangs of Odisha
Among all the life cycle rituals, death is most important in the sense that it brings in sorrow due to permanent separation in the family. Though death brings in the physical perishment of the body, it is basically a biosocial occurrence in the society. In view of the present study, the biological perception is just theoretically discussed, and the socio-culture dimensions have been greatly emphasized. With such an endeavor, the two adjoining primitive tribes have been compared to justify their socio-cultural practices in connection with death rituals. The Juangs speak a Mundari dialect and have their own cultural tradition different from the local Odias. The Paudi Bhuinyas, on the other hand, speak a corrupted Odia and maintain a cultural tradition different from the Juangs. The main purpose of comparing the two tribes is to reveal their specific traditions, similarities, differences, and the impact of local Odia traditions on them, particularly regarding mortuary practices.
