Baluchari Silk, the queen of Bengal's textiles, dominates the textile industry with its luster, sensuousness and glamour. There exists a strong conflict of interest between art and industry. While any art tries to cater to the aesthetics; profit oriented industry ignores aesthetics for more money. The Baluchari industry of Bishnupur is a rare exception to this universal truth. Here art enhances the profit margins and the basic necessity of wrapping one's body transforms into lovely costumes of our culture. It only needs a positive attitude and dedication from both the Government of West Bengal and the common Bengalese towards this glorious tradition, so that the ancient Baluchari craft can keep pace with the current age. This book is the extract of the doctoral thesis of the author (under the supervision of Professor Ranjan Basu, University of Calcutta). It analyses the strength, weakness, opportunities and challenges of the Baluchari silk Industry.
