Echoes in Stone: The Rock-cut Sculptures of Barabar Hill
The present book is part of an ongoing research series on the rock-cut sculptures of Eastern India, with a specific focus on the lesser-known sculptural heritage of Barabar Hill in Bihar. While Barabar is often acknowledged for its ancient rock-cut caves from the Mauryan period, this volume highlights another equally significant yet overlooked aspect—the numerous sculptures carved into the hill. Through meticulous fieldwork, including on-site surveys, high-quality photographs, & precise measurements, this study brings together over a hundred sculptures—some carved directly into the rock and others discovered as movable fragments. Each sculpture is carefully analysed with respect to its iconography (the religious or symbolic imagery it employs), style, and location within the landscape.
The primary aim of the book is to redirect the focus from Barabar’s well-known architecture to its sculptural legacy, emphasising how these works enhance our understanding of the region’s artistic and religious history. It reveals a complex cultural milieu where Brahmanical and other religious traditions coexisted, interacted, and left their imprint on the landscape. The significance of this work lies in its contribution to the fields of art history, archaeology, and heritage conservation within the South Asian archaeological landscape. By documenting both intact and fragmented sculptures, it safeguards valuable historical data.
Hope this work establishes a strong foundation for future research and comparative studies. It also informs conservation efforts and raises awareness about the cultural richness of Barabar Hill.
