Textiles, Communities, Trade and Collections: The Past in the Contemporary
he organisation of this volume is arranged under four themes. The first, "Textile, Clothing and Drapery," comprises six essays that engage with discourses and frameworks on the traditional and existing practices of textile production and clothing. The Second theme, "Communities, Materials and Identity," is a collection of four essays on textiles, clothing, and weaving culture representing specific communities' identities. The third theme in this volume is on "Trade of Indian Textiles and the Colonial Past," which consists of four essays. These are largely focussing on India's role as the trading
giant of printed and cotton textiles much before the European trading ventures in the region. The final section, "Collections in Indian Museums," has two essays on textile collections in Museums located in India emphasising the distinctive origin
and nature of their collection. The converging points of reference in the themes are aspects of traditions, identity, trade, and cultural exchanges. The distinct themes are not nemesis; rather, they compensate and supplement each other in trying
to provide an inclusive insight on textile culture. The themes and crucial observations in the essays draw upon relevant texts, historical documents, objects studies, oral history, case studies, and observations in the field.
