Synopsis India’s ties with Arab and African countries are rooted in history. Even before India became independent the ties with the countries in the region were close. Commercial relations were reinforced by the common experience of the struggle for freedom. Independent India’s diplomacy in the region stems from the expectations of the people on the dawn of independence in their countries and the policy of non-alignment based on friendship and high principles skilfully crafted by Jawaharlal Nehru. The book analyses some of the phases of Indian policy in the region. Developments like the rise of religious extremism in some of the countries and the spirit of globalisation influencing the policies of most countries have an impact in the development of ties between these countries and India.
