History of Modern India (1757-1947)

S.P. Nanda (Author)
Synopsis The object of this book is to present a comprehensive picture of the rise and termination of the British rule in India. The conquest of India by the British promoted a feeling among the English that British rule in India would endure till the end of time. It was this illusion which prompted them to adopt wrong policies that led to an estrangement between them and the Indian people. The outbreak of 1857 was an inevitable consequences of such antagonism. The congress movement which came to be established in 1885 (birth of the Indian National Congress) was the political facet of the resurgent India by the end of the 19 century. The national movement increased its agitation between the two world wars. The British government tried to pacify the Indians but it ended in fiasco. Finally, the British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act (1947) providing for the independence of two dominions (India and Pakistan). And India achieved its independence on August 15, 1947. It is believed that this book will be a useful and helpful addition, both for teachers and students of the period under study.
