Odissi: A Dance of Sculpture

Michael Weston (Author) Rekha Tandon (Author)
Synopsis

Odissi - A Dance of Sculpture provides a vivid account of the evolution of dance as ritual worship in the medieval tantric temples of Orissa, Eastern India. It was this tangible legacy from the past that provided the inspiration for the classical Indian dance form of odissi.

The story is told through sculptural imagery and begins more than two thousand years ago in the early Jain caves of Udaigiri, on the outskirts of present day Bhubaneswar, and culminates in the magnificent thirteenth century Sun Temple at Konark, where Orissan temple architecture achieved its final flowering.
