Synopsis

Kalatattvakosa series of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts has endeavoured to evolve an important modern device to grasp the essential thought and knowledge system of the Indian artistic and cultural tradition. Through an in-depth investigation into the primary sources of various Indological disciplines, the series aims at facilitating the reader to comprehend the interdisciplinary approach of Indological and art-historical research. The present volume: Sthana-Ayatana (Substratum/ Abode) is the seventh manifestation of the series devoted to core concepts of Indian art. It contains seven articles and starts its journey from the general notion of substratum sthana' and reaches up to the particular location of `ayatana'. A _cluster of six more related terms viz. tirtha, kunda, skambha/stambha, kona/asra/ vrtta, citi/caitya/stupa and sannivesa/lsamsthana are dealt herein.

Pranati Ghosal

Pranati Ghosal is a promising scholar in the field of Sanskrit and Vedic studies and engaged in the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Varanasi Branch. She has contributed brilliant papers in different seminars and co-edited five issues of the Annual Research Bulletin and twelve proceedings of Jnana-Pravaha. Her two books, Prasnavati and Everyday Life in Vedic India are in the process of publication. Beside the present volume, she has also co-edited the proceedings of another International Seminar on the Interaction Between Brahmanical and Buddhist Art, to be published soon.
