Synopsis Voluntary action has been the instrumentality for not only meeting the needs of the community and tackling its problems but also for participating in social, economic and political affairs of the community. India has a rich tradition in voluntary service. But, the role of NGOs in social welfare and social development is yet to be understood even after four decades of planning. It is in this context that the present book is being brought out. In this work, an attempt is made to examine the historical account of voluntary action and the structure and management of the voluntary welfare organizations in India and their role in social change and development.
