It seeks to identify and assess the creative/critical literary inputs that have gone into the formulation of Canada’s literary canon in English. It defines literary canon in the light of literary history, comparative evaluation, as also the history of Canada, by focusing on the clearly identifiable stages in the country’s literary development. An attempt has also been made to identify various positions taken by Canada’s outstanding canon makers. In doing this, the study underlines the country’s literary output down the ages, emphasizing all the while the unique Canadian literary stances.
