Upside Downside Up

Arvind Narale (Author)
Synopsis

“Upside Downside Up” is an ingenious showcase for an unprecedented art form. Each image, as it rotates to reveal its upside-down counterpart, unexpectedly reveals dual perspectives through a single drawing, a testimony to an uncommon vision and mastery. The artwork has already earned accolades from leading art critics and artists from the United States, UK and India, described as a catalyst for reflection upon fresh ideas for a new, artistic platform. It has been featured in several books, including one in which “reversible” poems accompany the topsy-turvy drawings. “...I have spent ten years perfecting this art. In the laborious process of creating such images, each change introduced to one side made it necessary to check and refine the opposite side. The challenge of creating lines that have meaning on both sides of the picture, in each part and in the whole, was filled with the agonies of trial and error, indeed a supreme test of patience. As I gradually and painstakingly honed my ability to sculpt pairs of meaningful images at an artistically mature level, I realized that I had laid my hands on a powerful magic that would allow me to fuse two different concepts into one set of lines and deliver a strong visual impact...” says the author. This art-form is not currently taught in any school in the world, though it carries immense potential: such as, students learning this new art form in art schools to expand their visualising faculties; commercial uses as rotating ads, rotating art in executive boardrooms, lobbies and libraries, and so on. It introduces fun and a sense of magic in the viewing of art, stimulating the viewer’s senses in a way not previously possible, teasing the audience into a challenge of guessing each “new” image that will emerge. “Upside Downside Up” is a new arrival on the leading edge of art-form, offering creative minds a new experience that can be thrilling and illuminating, and introducing a new ideal to strive for.
