Synopsis

In the present volume systematic enumeration of families Nyctaginaceae to Ceratophyllaceae is given. Families are arranged according to Bentham and Hooker’s system with incorporation of recent changes. Under each family key to the genera, followed by genus with its authority, key to the species and species enumeration is given. The genera under the family and species under the genera are arranged in alphabetical sequence. Keys are of the indented type. The enumeration of the species includes citation according to ICN, basionym and synonyms, if any to connect to Flora of British India and Flora of Presidency of Madras, description and distribution in the Eastern Ghats, flowering and fruiting period, vernacular names, specimens examined and distribution in India and world. Index to families, genera and species is given at the end. Line drawings of most of the species and photographs of many species are also given.

About the authors

T. Pullaiah

Prof. T. Pullaiah obtained his M.Sc., (1973) and Ph.D., (1976) degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia during 1976-78. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanical Gardens in about 16 countries. Professor Pullaiah joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as a Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. At present he is Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Botany; Co-ordinator and Chairman BOS in Biotechnology. Professor Pullaiah has published 25 books, 175 research papers and 35 popular articles. His books include Embryology of Compositae; Flora of Andhra Pradesh (4 Vols.); Trees of Andhra Pradesh; Taxonomy of Angiosperms; Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India; Flora of Ranga Reddi District; Flora of Anantapur District; Flora of Kurnool; Flora of Nizamabad; Embryology and Apomixis in Grasses; Flora of Eastern Ghats - Vol.1 and Vol.2; Biodiversity in India - Vol.1; etc. He is principal investigator of 14 major Research Projects totaling more than 70 lakhs funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, DOEF, GCC and WWF. Under his guidance 35 students obtained their Ph.D. degree and 32 students obtained their M. Phil. degree. He is recipient of Best Teacher Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh and receipient of Panchanan Maheshwari Medal of Indian Botanical Society for the year 2002 and Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy. He is a Member of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

S. Karuppusamy

Dr. S. Karuppusamy obtained his M.Sc. (1996) degree from Madurai Kamaraj University and Ph.D (2002) from Gandhigram University, Tamil Nadu. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow of Sri Krishndevaraya University (2004 – 2008), Anantapur. At present he is working as Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, The Madura College, Madurai since 2008. He has published 95 scientific papers in nationally and internationally reputed journals. He is the co-author of Flora of Andhra Pradesh (Vol. 5) and Flora of Eastern Ghats (Vol. 3 & 4). He is the recipient of Young Botanist Award 2006 from Indian Botanical Society. He has conferred many awards from Scientific bodies in India such as Fellow of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy, Fellow of Indian Botanical Society, Yong Scientist award from SERB, New Delhi, etc. He has completed two major research projects funded by UGC, New Delhi and NIF, Ahmedabad. He is the Principal Investigator of three major research projects from SERB, New Delhi, NIF, Ahmedabad and Forest Department of Tamil Nadu (TBGP- Tamilnadu Biodiversity Greening Project). He is life member of many scientific societies in India.

S Sandhya Rani

Dr. S Sandhya Rani obtained her M.Sc. degree (1991) from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, A P with first rank and Ph.d. (1998) from Sri Krishnadevaraya University under different projects funded by CSIR, DST and BARC in SK University.  She has published more than 30 research papers and co-authored two books entitled Tress of Andhra Pradesh and Flora of Guntur District.  She is a life member of three scientific societies viz. IAAT, IBS, NESA.  At present she is working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany in S K University, Anantpur.
