Economic Reforms and Public Distribution System
Synopsis
The main objectives of the New Economic Policy is creating conducive economic environment for promoting sustainable economic growth in the country. The structural reforms comprise measures such as Deregulations, Denationalisation, Defilation, and Devaluation. The Public Distribution System (PDS) in India forms as important strategy for intervening in the distribution of food grains and other essential commodities. The deregulation under economic reforms have influenced the performance of PDS in India. A member of studies made on PDS have shown that the programme is not doing very well. Besides the prevalent view is that the overemphasis on subsidies under PDS is desirable and it is a major anti poverty programme. With the purpose of studying, the impact of the PDS and performance of PDS in Dindigul District during the period 1986-87 to 1995-96, a project work has been done with the help of the financial assistance under Indian Council of social Science Research.
