Fungal Diversity in Odisha: Fungi of Subarnarekha Mangrove Ecosystem

Nibha Gupta (Author) Kiran Mohapatra (Author) Ors. (Author)
Synopsis

From the Foreward: Fungi are heterotrophs which flourish in various terrestrial, aquatic, fresh water and marine environments. They are saprophytic, parasitic or pathogenic which are able to proliferate on materials originated from animal, plant and human origin. Fungal diversity is immense and its loss may cause lasting damage to the complex network of life. It is one of the prospective candidates of biological diversity, omnipresent in the environment and has attracted much attention from researchers and academicians due to its vital role in human welfare.

Odisha is naturally endowed with a rich biodiversity in its unique habitats like the brackish waters of Chilika lake, mangrove forests of Bhitarkanika, nesting beaches of Gahirmatha to ZIlive Ridley turtles, dry deciduous to moist green forests of Similipal biosphere reserve and Gandhamardan hills known for their rich source of medicinal plants.

Regional plant resource centre, Bhubaneswar has been doing exceptional work on different aspects of microbiology especially documentation and conservation of fungi. The present scientific work aims towards inventorization of fungal diversity in Subarnarekha mangrove ecosystem of Odisha and is yet another significant publication that should prove useful for researchers dedicated in studies on fungi.
