Joseph A Gathia

Joseph A Gathia is journalist, writer and an expert on children's rights. Since 1980s, he has been involved in campaigning for the rights of children and has written on the subject focusing on issues around child labour, globalisation and children's well-being, juvenile justice, right to education and girl child labour in India. He has been teacher, researcher, academic, and trainer. He has participated in developing human rights curriculum exercise with the National Human Rights Commission India and Indira Gandhi National University (IGNU). He has penned succession of books over the years beginning with Women and Child Workers in Unorganised Sectors of India (1983); Child Labour in India (1992); Child Prostitution in India (1999), Girl Child in India (2002); Domestic Child labour In India (2002); Commercial Sex Trade in Asia (2003); Role of Media in Social Change: Human Rights in an Media and Social Change: Human Rights and Globalisation (2008). He has contributed over 20 chapters in different books on children and his articles have appeared in many leading newspapers and journals. Gathia has been editor of two weekly newspapers and a monthly journal and worked as bureau chief of another weekly newspaper. He holds degrees in literature and education. His current interest is social policies for children's well-being and influence of religion in the globalised world. He now works as an independent consultant and writer.
