Synopsis Globalization demands change in the existing structure, managements and mode of delivery of education system. The challenge before universities is to provide the student’s with the proper global competencies and well appropriate environment. The world economy is experiencing unprecedented changes. New developments in science and technology, media revolution and globalization are revolutionising the education sector. In the context of a rapidly changing global economy, universities have to cope with the emerging challenges and becoming competitive. Private institutions are increasing, universities have to compete more and more with private sector institutions to generate additional resources because government is not in favour of being of being the sole financier of higher education. This will create necessity for universities to offer their programmes more effectively and provide maximum satisfaction to their client group. Universities have to offer new educational programmes and produce human resource who will meet the challenges of the emerging competitive economy. Academic renewal and reorientation of educational programmes is possible only in better managed universities. For this there is need to restructuring university administration and organizational set up. Continuous improvement in the management and administration is possible through training and development and preparing administrators of higher learning institutions for the knowledge economy. There is therefore, an urgent need to reduce the number of levels in decision making. Universities are to be better managed more and more y market driven forces which are demanding efficiency, executive leadership, strategic, planning, cost effectiveness and control. There is need to introduce new management techniques to encourage speedy decision making, networking, team effort co-ordination among the departments of studies/collective responsibility to meet the challenges of new millennium. As we know that the universities are to respond to the challenges and uncertainties of new millennium, universities need the leaders who have strategic vision, well versed with latest techniques of managements, financial management, capable of leading a team in addition to performing routine functions. In the present university environment traditional role of the administration is fast changing in view of the technological advancement resulting network culture with greater opportunities for growth, experimentation and innovations, professional development of administrator assumes new significance.
