Synopsis

Aquaculture is the farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, and other aquatic organisms. Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish. It is commonly known as aqua farming. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aquaculture is understood to mean the farming of aquatic organisms including fish, molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic plants. Farming implies some form of intervention in the rearing process to enhance production, such as regular stocking, feeding, protection from predators, etc. Farming also implies individual or corporate ownership of the stock being cultivated. To come up with new research trends in fisheries we have designed a book- Contemporary Trends in Fisheries and Aquaculture. The 28 chapters of this book are a serious work done by researchers, scientists in the field of fisheries and aquaculture. The book covered a wide spectrum of subject related topics such as distribution of aquaculture organisms in world, fishes migration, habitat ecology of crabs, aqua plants and their medical importance. Some chapters deals with various concepts of aquaculture organisms such as probiotics use in aquaculture, zooplanktons abundance, reproductive system, circulatory system, effects of some harmone on aquaculture organisms and parasites that invade aquaculture organisms. The contributed authors have also worked on serious environmental issues such as assessment of drinking water, microbial quality of fishes, status of fish diseases, and effects of physico-chemical parameters of river regulation etc. The proceedings of this book describe an attempt for interaction by the juxtaposition of researchers in aquaculture that provided an opportunity for presentations, discussion and interaction of mutual benefit to the readers.

About the authors

B.D. Joshi

Porf. B.D. Joshi b. 1947 did his Ph.D. (1973) from University of Lucknow. He worked as a lecturer in Hindu College and then Kumaun University. He joined as eader & Head in the Dept. of Zoology of Gurukula Kangri University, Hardwar, where he became Professor by selection at an young age of 37yrs. Prof. Joshi has acted as Dean of the Faculty of Life Science for three trrms, DSW and Chief Proctor of univ,. and has been Head of The Dept. for about 17 tears. He has been expert member in panels of DST, CSIR, UGC, MEnF, etc. He has been honoured with Gold medals and Fellowships and citations by ZSI, India.

B N Pandey

Dr. B.N. Pandey (b 1946), Professor and Head, Dept. of Zoology, Magadh University, Bodh Gaya has brilliant academic career. He was awarded Gold Medals for standing first in first class both at B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. level. He is recipients of many other Gold Medals in such as Congress of Zoology Gold Medal in 1995 and 1998, Dorabjee Tata Gold Medal (2000) and Century Eminent Scientists Gold Medal (1998-2000) by Zoological Survey of India; Scientists of the year 2002 gold Medal by National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi. He obtained his Ph. D degree in the year 1975. Dr. Pandey to his credit has 145 original research papers published in the journal of National and International repute, 12 books, supervised successfully 36 Ph. D. students and organized 4 National Seminar. He worked as principal investigators in a number of major research projects funded by I.C.A.R., U.G.C. AND D.S.T., New Delhi. He was elected as president, section of zoology, entomology and fisheries of 83rd Indian Science Congress Association held at Patiala in January 1996. Besides attending several National and International Seminars abroad (Beijing, Taiwan Korea), he chaired one session at â€œThe 3rd International Symposium of Asia and Oceania Society for comparative Endocrinology held at Kwanjiu (south Korea) in September 1998. Presently, Dr. Pandey is devoted to his research and teaching activities in Magadh University, Bodh Gaya. Dr. Pandey has the honour of being honorary fellow of several learned societies of India. Dr. Pandey has been elected President, Zoological Survey of India in December 2001.
