Synopsis

Chanakya, also known as Vishnu Gupta or Kautilya, was an Indian professor of political science and economics at Takakhila University in the ancient times. He was also a cheif advisor to the Mauryan emperors between 350-275 Bc.

Chanakya Neeti is the English translation of Chanakya's Neetishastra. It is a result of Chanakya's in –depth study and understanding of the Indian way of life. The book is a set of tenets that spell out the ideal way for an individual to behave and deal with the society around them. He does so by way of Neeti Sutras (originally in Sanskrit), which are short sentences but have a powerful message in them. the book has these Neeti Sutras listed with their relevant English translation. The book is used as a guide to acheive success in any area of life. Chanakya Neeti is a useful guide even in the present times, showing an individual the ideal way of living in relation to their family, society and country. Chanakya also known as Vishnugupta or Kautilya was the pioneer of political sciences in ancient India, whose works are of great relevance even today.

Born into a Brahman family in 371 BC. Chanakya was educated at Takshashila, an ancient centre of learning located in north-western ancient India (present day Pakistan). He was highly learned person with in –depth knowledge in varied subjects like economics, polities, war strategies, medicine and astrology. Begining his career as a teacher, he went on to become a trusted ally of Emperor Chandragupta. Acting as the helping Chandragupta overthrow the powerful Nanda dynasty at Patliputra, in Magadha region and helped Chandragupta consolidate his power. Chanakya also served as the advisor to Chandragupta's son Bindusara.

Two books are attributed to Chanakya: Arthashastra and Chanakya Niti, also known as Chanakya Niti –shastra. The Arthashastra was discovered in 1905 and it discusses a variety of topics such as monetary and fiscel policies, welfare, international relations, and war strategies in detail. The text is believed to a compilation of the works of various authors by some scholars.

Chanakya Niti –shastra is a collection of aphorisms, said to be selected by Chanakya from the various shastras. It is treatise on the ideal way of life, and shows Chanakya's deep study of the Indian way of life. He used these sutras to groom Chandragupta and other selected disciplies in the art of ruling a kingdom. But these sutras are relevant in this modern age as well. These practical and powerful strategies provide a path planned life. If these strategies are followed in any sphere of life, victory is certain.

Chanakya died in 283 BC. Details regarding the death of Chanakya are shrouded in mystery. It is known that he lived a long life but it is unclear how he actually died. According to one legend, Chanakya retired to the jungle and starved himself to death. According to another legend, he died as result of a political conspiracy during the reign of Bindusara.

The diplomatic enclave in New Delhi is named Chanakyapuri in honor of Chanakya. Several other places and institutes are also names after him. He is also the subject of several television series and books.
