Good Governance in India
Synopsis
The book has grown out of the definition of good governance as outlined by the World Bank and other foreign aid-giving agencies, but goes beyond it. It covers the various facets of good governance which has made the context of the volume much broader. Thus the volume concerns itself not only with the conceptual framework of good governance but its historical analysis covering the ancient, medieval and the British period as also provides examples from Western history. It then goes on to examine good governance from various angles such as bureaucracy, police, responsive administration, army, corruption, democracy, terrorism, human rights, public participation, legislature, decentralization, NGOs, etc. It further proceeds to examine the concerns for good governance. In brief, the book covers much broader areas than prescribed by the World Bank and other foreign aid-giving agencies.
