Centering the Margins: Essays on the Plays of Mahesh Dattani

Angelie Multani (Author)
Synopsis

Angelie Multani's eagerly awaited book on Mahesh Dattani focuses on three interrelated themes that are central to his oeuvre - Gender, Gay Desire, and Memory. Multani reads Dattani's plays from these three perspectives to show us the various layers of his plays, taking care to see the works as pieces of theatre as much as dramatic texts to be read. As one of our most insightful critics of theatre in India and the leading scholar on Dattani, Multani places Dattani in the history of Indian English theatre in her introduction to the book while bringing out his literary and theatrical significance, his craft, and his impact. The book gives us the essential Dattani, and is a masterly introduction to his plays, one which will influence all further scholarship on this most important of our contemporary Indian English playwrights." GJV Prasad.
