Amitava Mitra (Author) Kunal Chattopadhyay (Author)
Synopsis The concept of sustainable development has been a focus of debate in the social and natural sciences. The debate currently ranges principally between environmentalists who plead for resource sustainability and economists who favour sustainable resource and income level. The book brings together both the economists and environmentalists and pleads for sustainable development of nature-based tourism in the North Eastern States. the present volume, is a forward looking research work on the inter linkages of environment and nature based tourism of the North Eastern States in general, and Arunachal Pradesh in particular, which have enormous wealth of forests and wildlife resources and rich biodiversity, and need careful attention for appropriate strategy for the utilization of these resources without much environmental degradation. The first part of the book concentrates on estimating the recreational value of tourism of selected tourist spots of Arunachal Pradesh using TCM and speculates on the extent to which this value depends on the forests and the rich biodiversity present in the State. It also shows how the sustainable management of forests and wildlife can provide very significant and much needed revenue for the States of North East India in general, and Arunachal Pradesh in particular. The second part focuses on identifying the possible negative impacts of tourism in environment by applying the Delphi Technique so that the negative impacts of tourism may not neutralize the enormous potential gains of tourism may not neutralize the enormous potential gains of tourism and proper care can be taken to avert any such eventuality in future. The book will be a valuable source of information for the environmental economists, environmentalists, the students of tourism, those professionally concerned with tourism and finally the policy makers.
