Synopsis

This book, Japanese Literature in Indian Translations: Issues and Challenges, has emanated from the research papers presented in the two-day international seminar on “State of Japanese Literature in Indian Translations: Reception and Appreciation”, held at JNU during 26-27 October 2016. It is divided in to three parts.

The first part contains thirteen papers in English, mainly dealing with theoretical frameworks and practical problems of translation in general and Japanese to Indian languages in particular. One of the papers in this section also provides an updated, detailed account of translations of Japanese literary works into Indian languages till now.

The second part contains five research papers in Japanese, mainly dealing with the various practical problems of translation when Japanese literary texts are translated into Indian vernaculars.

About the author

P.A. George

Dr. P.A. Geoge (1959) is an associate professor at the Centre for Japanese and North East Asian Studies, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies. He teaches courses in Japanese Language and Literature. He has been specializing on Miyazawa Kenji and his works since mid 1990s. In 2002, the government of Hanamaki City, Iwate prefecture, Japan, bestowed him with â€˜The Miyazawa Kenji Shorei-shoâ€™ (The Miyazawa Kenji Award for Young Scholars) in recognition to his research on Kenji and translation of some of his childrenâ€™s stories into Malayalam. Dr. George also translated some novellas of Shimazaki Toson, another renowned Japanese novelist of twentieth century, into English and published few years ago. Presently, he is working on a Malayalam translation of short stories of famous Japanese authors like Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Kawabata Yasunari and others.
