Synopsis Interminable and unjustifiable delays in our criminal justice system are today compromising the basic legal rights of countless thousands of Indians, and imperceptibly corroding the very foundation of constitutional policy based on the rule of law. The manifold increase in the number of undertrial prisoners in the country in the recent past speaks of gigantic nature of the problem of culpable delay.
